wardrobe vetting

I take good care of possessions, including clothing, and am quite reluctant to part with them. However, I haven’t seriously gone through my clothes since leaving for college over 5 years ago so it was time despite my sentimentality towards lettings things go. The picture below shows what I could bare to part with after about an hour of vetting:

All in all I parted with the following # Discarded (# Retained):

5 (41) T-shirts
3 (22) Polos
1 (7) Short-sleeve button-down
1 (12) Long-sleeve T
5 (6) Collared long-sleeve T
1 (10) Informal button-down
0 (25) Dress button-down
2 (8) Shorts
1 (11) Jeans
3 (2) Informal non-jeans
1 (8) Slacks

While it doesn’t seem like much, its a start and frees up a fair amount of hanging space in my closet for new arrivals. Some of the items simply didn’t fit anymore. (Oops, I’m not a 30-31 waist — more like 32-33.) I’m sure I’ll have another go at it in fewer than 5 years as I imagine by that time I will phase out much of the “college” apparel.

Some interesting observations:

1. The 41 T’s that I retained are largely “memorabilia” from college events, clubs, and school representation with the remaining from other events and destinations in the past 5 years. I no longer own any non-printed T’s which is a complete 180 degrees from my T’s back in high school.

2. Collared long-sleeve T (largely rugby shirts) were significantly thinned out because I rarely wear them. When given the option I’d opt to just wear a button down as this is my normal daily dress, even on the weekends.

3. My collection of casual non-jeans pants was thinned similarly as above. For those that didn’t know me back in high school, it may be hard to believe but I didn’t own a pair of Jeans from 7th until 12th grade! (I was all about the Khakis) We can all thank my girlfriend at the time for buying me a pair of Jeans for my 18th birthday as starting me back in jeans… I digress. Now, I opt to wear jeans normally since they have become acceptable in most every situation, and other informal pants are unnecessary. Its a bit ironic too that I spend far more on average on a pair of jeans than slacks.

To Goodwill the pile goes!
