my wall art finally arrived: part 2

After approximately 8 steam cycles it was off to the ironing board to remove the remainder of each of the soft folds that were made more pliable with the humidity:

I used the iron on the low-heat “silk” setting with moderate steam. At first I placed a dishtowel between the iron and the poster to make sure that it would not overheat the forty-year-old paper. After a bit of practice, I became comfortable with applying the iron directly to the poster. The only watch out was to remove water drops quickly before they were able soak in to the material.

To set the material, I removed the glass tops from my label collage tables to set up a perfectly flat area large enough for the sections. After each section was ironed, I placed it on the glass and stacked books on the folds. After all 12 were completely ironed, I finished the stacks off with some extra goodies:

I now can say that each and every college notebook I saved was worth it. There are 60 notebooks in total, one for each college course that I took, not to mention a few useful textbooks, texts I couldn’t resell, and numerous readers. I topped the stack off with some poker chips for good measure.

I plan to remove the books tomorrow and examine sections. Depending on how flat they are, I may move on to the final stage of unfolding the “hard fold,” opt to re-iron the folds or wait until the weekend to remove the books. I’m excited with the progress thus far and will be prompt with updates.
